Of all the traditional folk arts, paper (or silhouette) cutting celebrates “Swissness” in ways none others manage to achieve. This traditional art brings paper images to life by using tiny scissors or sharp knives. Composed of one or more pieces of paper, in colour or in black & white, traditional mountain life, alpine activities and animals are delicately displayed on a white background. Paper cut art appeared in China during the Han dynasty in 4th century AD after the Chinese invented paper in 105 AD. Till modern ages, the paper cutting continued to be practiced in China as a popular form of decorative art. By the eighth or ninth century paper cutting appeared in West Asia and it took several centuries before it was established in Switzerland in the 16th century as “Scherenschnitt” (in German scissors cut) art.
