INTERLAKEN / JUNGFRAU “TOP OF EUROPE”

The town of Interlaken lies in the Bernese Oberland, between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. The vacation destination, which is presided over by the three mighty mountains, Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, is the starting point for numerous activities.

By the beginning of the 19th century Interlaken had already become renowned for its impressive mountain scenery. Famous contemporaries such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Felix Mendelssohn traveled in these mountains. Interlaken's success as a tourist destination was further enhanced by the completion of the Bernese Oberland Railway in 1890 and the Jungfrau Railway in 1912.

Since then, the Jungfrau railway has been making its journey to Europe’s highest-altitude railway station at 3.454 metres a.s.l. – right at the heart of the UNESCO heritage site “Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch”. All through the year, the cog railway runs steeply up through a tunnel to the Jungfraujoch from Kleine Scheidegg. The tunnel is seven kilometres in length and was built between 1896 and 1912. One stop within the tunnel offers spectacular views onto the glacier world outside through windows in the Eiger North Face. On the summit, visitors are greeted by a high-Alpine wonder world made of ice, snow and rocks. Jungfraujoch is the Europe’s highest-altitude station at 3.454 m a.s.l., Europe’s highest-altitude post office with its own area code (3801)and the Aletsch glacier is the longest Alpine glacier (23 kilometres).
